The distinctive indigo dye known as Katsu-iro has a long tradition stretching all the way back to 15th century Japan during the Sengoku period. The unique blue hue of this indigo dye signified victory, and it was proudly used on armor worn by samurai. Grand Seiko previously deployed this color on the dial of SBGC238 to great effect. Today, Grand Seiko brings together this dynamic hue with the brand’s acclaimed Iwao, or rock pattern, dial in SBGA469, a highly versatile Spring Drive package through the Heritage Collection.
The rock pattern is perhaps most famously featured on SBGA413 Shunbun, one of the four original Japan Seasons editions where it was given a light-pink tonality that evokes the sakura, or cherry blossoms. Here, with its deep, dark-blue coloring, the rock texture is transformed into something more decidedly classic.
The dial has broad, faceted indexes that contrast perfectly against the blue. Grand Seiko’s iconic handset features a hairline-brushed top surface so as not to get lost against the darker dial. As always, legibility is monumental here.
SBGA469 measures 41mm in diameter, 12.5mm in thickness, and 49mm in length. The stainless steel case offers a modern interpretation of the acclaimed Grand Seiko Style. It features eye-catching geometry with long, faceted lugs emerging from the mid-case and curving down to hug the wrist. Finishing is an elegant blend of hairline and Zaratsu-polished surfaces. The crown at three screws down, and the case is rated to 10 bar. SBGA469 comes paired with a matching five-piece bracelet and clasp.
A sapphire case back allows for an open view of the Spring Drive caliber 9R65. Manufactured at the Shinshu Watch Studio in Nagano, Spring Drive combines a mainspring with an electro-magnetic regulator that functions without an external power source. It delivers a precision of one second a day and has a second hand the advances in a smooth, gliding motion, a feature that is unique to Spring Drive.
SBGA469 is a Grand Seiko Boutique Online Limited Edition that will retail for $5,000. It will be available December 15th, 2021.
