The SBGH351 and SBGH353 are two timepieces that celebrate Japan’s natural beauty. Succeeding the outgoing SBGH271 and SBGH273 models, these two modern reinterpretations of the iconic 62GS, originally introduced in 1967, honor the changing seasons with exceptional craftsmanship and timeless design.
The SBGH351 captures the essence of Rikka, the seventh of Japan’s 24 sekki (seasons), signifying the transition from spring to early summer. The deep-green dial reflects the lush greenery of Japan’s landscapes, swaying gently in the wind that carries the warmth of the season. Accented by a shimmering gold GS logo and seconds hand, the design evokes the vibrant yet tranquil atmosphere of this treasured seasonal moment.
The SBGH353 pays homage to Shūbun, the 16th sekki, marking the autumnal equinox. Its rich blue dial mirrors the clear night skies of autumn, illuminated by the moon and stars. Gold-toned details, including the Grand Seiko logo and seconds hand, stand out against the deep-blue backdrop, evoking the luminous beauty of celestial light on tranquil evenings.
Both models honor the groundbreaking design of the original 62GS, Grand Seiko’s first automatic watch. The bezel-free construction creates a wide dial opening, while the distortion-free surfaces and sharp edges—meticulously crafted through Zaratsu polishing—exemplify Grand Seiko’s commitment to precision finishing and artistry. The angular case design lends both watches a distinctive yet timeless presence on the wrist.
The cases and bracelets are crafted from Ever-Brilliant Steel, a highly corrosion-resistant alloy with a PREN value 1.7 times higher than the steel found in most high-end watches and an upgrade from previous models. Measuring 40mm in diameter, 12.9mm in thickness, and 47mm in length, each watch offers a balanced and comfortable fit, complemented by a secure three-fold clasp.
Both models feature box-shaped sapphire crystals with anti-reflective coating, enhancing both clarity and durability. The sapphire crystal case back provides a glimpse into the intricate craftsmanship of the movement.
At the heart of both the SBGH351 and SBGH353 lies the Hi-Beat Caliber 9S85, a high-frequency mechanical movement hand-assembled by the artisans at the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi. This movement delivers exceptional accuracy of +5 to -3 seconds per day (when static) and a practical power reserve of approximately 55 hours. Operating at 36,000 vibrations per hour, it balances precision with durability, ensuring reliable performance under all conditions.
Both watches will be available starting February 1, 2025, at Grand Seiko Boutiques and authorized retailers for $7,200.
