In 1967, the 62GS debuted Grand Seiko’s first automatic movement. With its bezel-free design and elegantly curved lugs, this watch would go on to become one of Grand Seiko’s best-known designs. It continues to be a source of inspiration to this very day, and its familiar profile can be found housing mechanical, Spring Drive, and quartz movements.
With the new STGF387 and STGF389, Grand Seiko honors this mid-century classic of watch design with a pair of small quartz models, each measuring just 26mm in diameter and featuring diamond hour markers. Each has a beautiful press-patterned dial that evokes a different aspect of the spring season.
With its pale pink dial, the STGF387 takes its inspiration from hana-ikada. Each spring in Japan, toward the end of sakura season, cherry blossoms fall from their branches and land on the surfaces of rivers. Blanketing the water’s surface, the flower petals form what are called hana-ikada, or flower rafts. The appearance of hana-ikada captures the poignant beauty of finite things and the delight to be derived from understanding and appreciating the transience of natural beauty.
STGF389, which features a pale blue dial, captures another aspect of spring’s beauty, evoking a gentle breeze that dazzles the senses when the cherry blossoms are in bloom. This dial transports the wearer to a spring day in Japan, when a pleasant breeze causes the cherry blossoms to shimmer in the warm sunshine.
Like every 62GS creation, the dials of these two small quartz watches take on an expansive appearance due to the lack of a bezel. The openness of the design highlights the pressed pattern dial, exposing its beauty and workmanship, including, of course, the hour markers on the dial. The Zaratsu polishing technique creates a striking, multifaceted case design.
Powering each new creation is the Caliber 4J51, a compact quartz movement that allows these watches to maintain their elegant proportions. Crafted from stainless steel and water-resistant to 10 bar, these models manage to feel truly special without sacrificing anything in terms of capability or ease of use. In short, they are Grand Seiko through and through.
The STGF387 Cherry Blossom “Hana-Ikada” and STGF389 Cherry Blossom “Spring Breeze” will be available at Grand Seiko boutiques and select retail partners worldwide beginning in November 2025.
