The 44GS, introduced in 1967, set the foundation for Grand Seiko’s signature aesthetic, shaping what is now recognized as the Grand Seiko Style. This timeless design philosophy remains at the heart of the brand’s craftsmanship. The latest release to feature the mid-sized form, SBGW323 continues Grand Seiko’s reinterpretation of the 44GS, offering a refined balance of heritage and modernity.
At 36.5mm in diameter, 11.6mm in thickness, and 42.7mm from lug to lug, the proportions of the SBGW323 closely align with the original 44GS while incorporating subtle refinements. The case features Grand Seiko’s signature Zaratsu polishing, creating distortion-free mirror surfaces that contrast beautifully with delicate hairline finishing—each detail meticulously executed by master artisans.
The dial showcases the iconic Mt. Iwate pattern, its texture inspired by the ridges of the mountain. This time, the dial is presented in a striking shade of purple, paying tribute to the purple kiri—the official flower of Iwate Prefecture. The play of light across the dial’s intricate pattern enhances its depth, creating an ever-changing visual experience. Complementing the design, the box-shaped sapphire crystal adds a vintage touch while ensuring clarity and durability.
Powering the SBGW323 is the hand-assembled Caliber 9S64, a manual-winding mechanical movement that undergoes 17 days of testing in six positions—which is more stringent than the chronometer standard. It offers a 72-hour power reserve and meets the Grand Seiko Standard of +5 to -3 seconds per day in static conditions.
The watch is paired with a stainless steel bracelet, while its lug holes and 18mm width allow for endless customization with leather straps.
The SBGW323 will be available at Grand Seiko Boutiques and authorized retailers starting May 2025.
